In early November 2013 Typhoon Haiyan slammed into the Philippines and brought winds in excess of 235km/h. In the United States this would be comparable to a near level 5 hurricane. Nearly 4 million people were affected by this torrential storm. In the days following the storm communication was very difficult and relief workers were having difficulty traveling to some of the most damaged villages. Buildings and homes had been crushed and debris blocked many of the roadways.
Compassion Services International was in contact with a missionary in the Cebu area and it was determined that a Disaster Response Team would fly to Cebu to help with the relief efforts and assess how CSI could offer ongoing assistance. The team departed from the United States on November 14, 2013 and spent several days delivering food and offering medical care to storm victims. Once the team arrived back in the United States we remained in contact with those still on the ground and it was decided that CSI would develop a program to help rebuild 25 churches. For most people living in the Philippines religion is a central part of life. Having a place to gather and worship together is important to those who are in the process of rebuilding their lives. CSI is excited to offer this Adopt-A-Church program so that families can begin to feel a sense of normalcy in their weekly routine. Gaining strength from God and one another is vital in the healing and rebuilding process.
CSI has gathered a list of 25 churches and the amounts needed to rebuild or repair each one. Individuals, businesses, churches or groups can donate an amount to adopt a particular church.
